Mexican-based Classic Hits or "Oldies"

Spanish language "Classic Hits" for a Mexican heritage audience is often, mistakenly, called "oldies." "Oldies" formats in the US general market are those playing a 60's-based music list. Spanish language "Classic Hits" stations play only a tiny number of 60's songs, with the majority of tunes coming from the 70's, 80's, 90's and the last decade.

And, unlike "oldies" stations with their over-50 year old core audience, the average age for this format's listeners is around 36.  This format is often listed in Arbitron station rosters as "Spanish Adult Hits." Whatever the name, it means the same thing: the biggest hits in Mexico of the last 40 years.

No such format exists in Mexico; this is a creation for persons born in Mexico who now live in the United States. The format originated at "Recuerdo" KRCD in Los Angeles in the year 2000 and was developed by Program Director Amalia González, HBC Programming Vice President David Gleason and the noted researcher, Owen Leach.

Here are examples of the wide variety of songs that this format plays. A station may have a library of as many as1,000 songs in regular rotation making this a unique format in many ways
